Calphalon pans have grown in popularity in recent years, praised for their non-stick and easy-to-clean surface. They are durable and scratch resistant, but are Calphalon pans dishwasher safe?
What are Calphalon pans?
Calphalons pans are special non-stick pans from the Newell brand. They are known for revolutionizing non-stick pans since the 1960s.
Their cookware ranges from aluminum to cast iron and stainless steel. Calphalon offers a complete line of cookware sets suitable for any professional or home cook. However, they are best known for their anodized aluminum pans.
VonanodizingThe aluminum of the pan, Calphalon pans are protected with a durable coating. The anodic oxygen layer gives the pan a corrosion resistant surface. The anodized coating also gives the pans their non-stick coating.
The company is praised for its durable yet more affordable set of cookware and utensils. But can they go in the dishwasher?
Are Calphalon pans dishwasher safe?
To answer the question, most Calphalon pans are dishwasher safe. Unless specified by the manufacturer, they are generally dishwasher safe, especially on high-end models.
There are of course a few exceptions. Calphalon pans with a ceramic non-stick coating are usually not suitable for the dishwasher because they have a much more sensitive surface.
Although they can be put in the dishwasher, professionals do not recommend doing so. Non-stick pans and dishwasherdon't go together, but why?
Dangers of putting pans in the dishwasher
As mentioned above, Calphalon pans are mainly made to withstand high temperatures. Their non-stick anodized aluminum and stainless steel pans can withstand temperatures of 450-500 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, regularly using the dishwasher to clean your pan still has many risks, including:
damage to the coating
Most of Calphalon's coating consists of a 3-layer non-stick coating. However, the Calphalon website states that the coating is durable. Running the pan through the dishwasher over and over can cause the mattress to wear down over time.
Fortunately, unlike Teflon pans, there is the anodized aluminum coating of Calphalon pansPFOAAndPTFE-Free. You don't have to worry about toxic chemicals leaching into your food if you scrape your Calphalon pan. The only problem may be discoloration and removal of non-stick properties.
Once the surface coating is corroded, the aluminum core of the pan can be put through the arduous processes of the dishwasher.
Aluminum and the dishwasher do not go together. Once the aluminum core is exposed, it will begin to discolor and damage your pan.
Another danger of using a dishwasher with Calphalon pans is the hot humidity of the dishwasher. Cast iron pans are particularly at risk in the dishwasher, as they cannot be cleaned thoroughly with detergent and water.
Detergent suitable for dishwashers can attack the pan materials. There is a risk of discoloration and corrosion when using a detergent with bleach and sulfates.
Fortunately, there is a way to avoid this risk. To minimize damage to your pans, you can use a non-abrasive detergent.
The dishwasher cleaning process can damage your pans. It's the combination of heat, water, pressure and detergent that can affect the quality of your pan over time.
Using the dishwasher from time to time is the best option. To get the most out of your pans, hand washing is still recommended.

- Cleaning with baking soda and vinegar –Baking soda and vinegar cleaning methods work best on Calphalon pans with stubborn burn marks or food residue. To perform this method, you must: Mix equal parts vinegar and water and add to the pan. Leave the surface for 30 minutes to an hour. The acidic nature of vinegar helps remove burnt-on stains and stuck-on food. Once the vinegar is removed, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda on top.
